This qualitative study investigated a Malawian preservice secondary school teacher‘s mathematics for teaching exponential equations. The study was carried out with one preservice teacher. Data was generated using video lesson recordings and analysed using thematic analysis. The findings reveal that the preservice teacher was not able to unpack or decompress equation solving to make it accessible to students. .
