Students ability to apply mathematical knowledge to various situations has been one of the major concerns in mathematics education research. However, little is known about the assessment strategies that have a substantial contribution to the development of mathematical problem-solving skills in kindergarten children through to upper secondary school students. In this review of existing literature, we discuss the contribution of assessment strategies in the last three decades in strengthening...

Mathematics remains an indispensable pivot for technical and analytical skills that are relevant to other fields and everyday living experiences. Most learners experience challenges in comprehending mathematical concepts due to teachers' teaching strategies; hence, this paper focuses on the use of blended learning as a strategy. The study aimed to enhance learners' mathematical knowledge using the blended pedagogical strategy in two different private primary schools in Imo State, Nigeria. A...

Previous studies have often demonstrated that educational television can have a positive effect on learning outcomes in low-income countries when delivered in controlled settings. However, existing research in low-resource contexts has scarcely considered the association between child outcomes and viewing in usual environments (ie, at their home, a friend’s home or a relative’s home). This lack of research is striking, as evidence from controlled settings might provide limited information on...

This study evaluated the adapted science and mathematics books for students with visual impairment in inclusive classrooms in Tanzania secondary schools. It was conducted in 14 regions using qualitative and quantitative approaches. Data were generated from a sample of 19 heads of school, 103 students, and 77 teachers. The findings of the study show that the books are appropriate for students with visual impairment. However, they lacked enough tactile illustrations and pictures. Further...

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has spread exponentially throughout the world in a short period, aided by our hyperconnected world including global trade and travel. Unlike previous pandemics, the pace of the spread of the virus has been matched by the pace of publications, not just in traditional journals, but also in preprint servers. Not all publication findings are true, and sifting through the firehose of data has been challenging to peer reviewers, editors, as well as...

This paper looks at Ghanaian Colleges of Education tutors’ perception on the personal and institutional preparedness for online teaching-learning during the COVID-19 crisis. The study selected 24 tutors from 9 Colleges of Education (CoEs) in the Eastern and Greater Accra Regions. 7 CoEs are in Eastern while 2 are in Greater Accra. Using the convenience sampling technique, 24 tutors were selected as the accessible population. The research design used was the qualitative with a semi-structured...

This new and updated second edition of Debates in Mathematics Education explores the major issues that mathematics teachers encounter in their daily lives. By engaging with established and contemporary debates, this volume promotes and supports critical reflection and aims to stimulate both novice and experienced teachers to reach informed judgements and argue their point of view with deeper theoretical knowledge and understanding. Divided into five accessible sections, this book...

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of mathematical self-efficacy on higher- order thinking skills with the accelerated learning model inferentialism approach. The study was conducted using a type of combination research in which the design taken was sequential exploratory. The research subjects were based on the results of the self-efficacy questionnaire which were categorized into three namely subjects for the high, medium and low categories, each chosen 2 subjects who...

The purpose of this study was to investigate errors of first year undergraduate students when solving inequalities. Data were generated through a test and follow-up interviews. The inequalities include linear, quadratic, rational and absolute value inequalities. Findings reveal errors in expressing compound inequalities, errors in representing solutions as intervals, generalising equality to inequality, including a zero of denominator in the solution set of rational inequalities,...

This study investigated the mediating roles of self-efficacy and anxiety on the effects of teacher–student relationship on mathematical problem-solving ability. A total of 1667 fifth graders from central China participated in the large-scale survey. The findings indicated that (1) teacher–student relationship had a direct and positive effect on students’ mathematical problem-solving ability; (2) the positive link between teacher–student relationship and mathematical problem-solving ability...

The paper reports some of the findings of Ghana’s participation in the Pan African Research Agenda on the Pedagogical Integration of ICT. The study examined Ghanaian educational institutions’ capacity for, and approach to, ICT pedagogical integration. A junior high school, three senior high schools and a teacher education university were sampled by a University of Education, Winneba (UEW) based research team according to given guidelines. The study combined document analysis and survey...

This study explores the predictive influence of student-teacher interaction, school environment, and parental involvement on mathematics anxiety among deaf learners in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria. A total of 249 deaf learners answered a structured questionnaire. Findings revealed that student-teacher interaction and parental involvement have a significant positive relationship with mathematics anxiety among deaf learners. The study also revealed that student-teacher interaction is the most...

Mathematics is an important subject in senior high education as it forms the basis for most taught subjects. In Ghana, it is a common practice to find parents enrolling their children in private after-school mathematics tutorials. Teachers who teach after-school tutorials usually organize class after school hours or during the weekends for a fee. Also, teaching can take the form of one-to-one private tuition or group tuition. Although after-school mathematics tuition has become a common...

Mathematics achievement in senior high schools (SHS) in Ghana is not encouraging and this has become a concern for major stakeholders. Several studies have been conducted to provide information to understand the issue of poor mathematics achievement. Of all the studies, areas regarding the joint influence of experience, pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) and subject matter knowledge (SMK) have been less explored in Ghana. In this study, the interplay among these variables is examined in an...
